By Klaus Besier CEO, RES Software I’ll make a prediction: the days of RES Software and AppSense competition are nearing their end. If you’ve looked at our workspace virtualization space, you know there are really only two players out there. (Yes there are others, but they provide point solutions or solutions that only work within VDI rather than today’s hybrid desktop infrastructures.) In terms of end-to-end workspace virtualization providers it’s “us,” RES Software, and it’s “them,” AppSense. And it’s been that way for years. AppSense is the best kind of competitor to have. They spring from the same space as RES Software, but they’re pursuing a starkly different vision. And it’s this difference in vision that is now separating us … READ MORE >>

You’ve upgraded your desktops. You’ve upgraded your data centers. But have you upgraded the IT experience for users? Years and years ago if a user wanted a service from IT, they would call the help desk and open a request or ticket. That could be a request for applications, printers, a new peripheral or even a password or pin reset. The user’s whole experience with IT requests was dominated by a call to the help desk and then: hurry up and wait. Why? Because that help desk agent had to seek approval requests, do resource discovery, acquire the requested service and then deliver the service to the end user. All manually. Even with the introduction of the enterprise app store … READ MORE >>

By Jeff Fisher, VP Strategy The world of enterprise IT is in flux and changing at a pace faster than any of us likely imagined even a few years ago. Just looking at some of the recent headlines around declining PC shipments and Windows 8 adoption makes it clear to us at RES Software that our industry is entering the post-PC era.So what does this mean for a company like RES that was born out of a unique set of challenges and related opportunities created by the Wintel paradigm? How can RES stay relevant and strategic in this brave new world?
The answer is one that we have been working on for nearly a decade.
I have been attending, speaking at and sponsoring MMS since 2005. I can honestly say that this year’s MMS was unlike any other before. Why? Because this year’s was the most anticlimactic event I have had the displeasure of attending since Citrix Synergy EMEA 2012.This year’s MMS lacked any net new announcement. There was no buzz, no excitement and no energy. It felt like Microsoft viewed this as an obligation. They committed to it last year publicly at the Venetian casino. Boldly announcing they would do it again but in 2013 it would be in New Orleans. Oops. Then in the Fall it was discretely changed to Vegas and at the Mandalay Bay, which was host to a disappointing MMS … READ MORE >>

This is already part 3 of the pinning series and is considered as an addition to part 1 and part 2 about pinning to the Microsoft Windows Start Menu and Taskbar. The article was born to a recent question we are getting at support and newly introduced technologies made a solution to this possible. A problem system administrators often run into is how to put multiple websites to the Taskbar and / or Start Menu, and if possible use a different icon for the webpage instead of the standard Internet Explorer icon when using a Microsoft Windows 7 based operating system. Several options have been tried, from a RES Workspace Manager managed Internet Explorer with custom icons combined with URL’s … READ MORE >>

I just wrapped up a webinar with two great partners of mine, Ntersect and X-IO technologies, on why some companies struggle with their XenApp migrations. Now, I’ve blogged on the end of life for XenApp 4.5 before but this webi was a comprehensive case study on a healthcare organization in Texas and the process they went through to achieve success and the lessons they learned. First and foremost, even though this is a real customer, I will change the names to maintain privacy rules. So, let’s call this hospital “Rampart.” At “Rampart” they were faced with the need to move off of their existing Presentation Server 4.5 and migrate to a new XenApp 6.5 environment. The first thing they looked … READ MORE >>

XenApp connector for SCCM Today Microsoft and Citrix announced the release of the new XenApp connector for System Center Configuration Manager 2012 (a.k.a Project Thor). When I was at Microsoft I was part of the team that brought the original connector to market (f.k.a Project Titan). These releases are great steps forward in the user centric computing model. In their blog (which you can find here)…Citrix told us a story about “Ann”, as part of their news release on a XenApp connector for Microsoft SCCM. More About Ann… We at RES, given our deep interest in technology about how IT professionals are going to resolve consumerization trends, are interested in such things. So we decided to take a closer look … READ MORE >>

Introduction: Lately we have been receiving significantly more calls regarding Microsoft’s System Center Configuration Manager software and how this product can be used to stream virtual applications to clients. Basically the challenge we notice some of our customers are facing, is how they can benefit from a scalable, location based distribution method (like SCCM) while at the same time maintaining application manageability with RES Workspace Manager. The challenge: When using both the SCCM and App-V on the same workstation, and using RES Workspace Manager on top of this, things can get complicated. What we have learned is that there is a lot of confusion out there on which client is actually doing the launch of the App-V … READ MORE >>
