This blog describes a rare issue with printers at a customer’s site. Environment: In fact everything seemed to be configured correctly: - Windows 2008 + Citrix XenApp - Universal Printer Driver - Printers "Fast Connect" within RES PowerFuse - Mandatory User Profiles The registry settings concerning the user’s printers were correct. So far so good. Problem: When the user tries to open the printer properties, or was going to print for the very first time it took ages before there was shown anything: sometimes nothing happened, sometimes a ‘not responding’ message, sometimes the second shot was successful, but always the following Windows Event Log error: The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read ... To adapt to the latest changes within Citrix XenApp products the RES PowerFuse Citrix Integration had to be changed in the way of publishing and launching a Citrix XenApp application. Basically the most important change within RES PowerFuse 2010 SR3 is the way a RES PowerFuse published passthrough application is launched. When published with “Use the Citrix Program Neighbourhood agent (pnagent.exe)” method the commandline has been changed : before SR3 ".\PNagent.exe" /QLAUNCH "" since SR3   ".\PNagent.exe" /QLAUNCH ":" Special attention is needed when upgrading to SR3 when using Citrix Web Interface 4 and earlier. This Web Interface does not support Multiple Farms, so this new commandline might fail. A registry key can be set to revert to ... READ MORE>>

RES Support received a lot of questions about starting a published application that results in a full desktop without RES PowerFuse loaded, or when starting the RES PowerFuse published desktop which ends in a remote desktop without RES PowerFuse loaded. Most of the issues are addressed at Windows 2008 (R2) Terminal Servers. This issue is perfectly reproducible without RES PowerFuse, indicating RES PowerFuse cannot be the root cause. In a Citrix XenApp 6 environment, publish for example notepad.exe within the Citrix Delivery Services Console. When launching this application also a full desktop is started. Sometimes when you create a new domain user without defining the 'Terminal Services Profile' path, this user is able to launch the published application correctly. A ... READ MORE>>

Some parts within your infrastructure resides on the same technology for many years. Where software vendors introduce many fancy new features and enhancements some parts will remain quite the same for a relative long period. Lucky for us IT administrators, we don’t have to redesign everything when upgrading the infrastructure. The last decade using an ICA passthrough session was easily configured within RES PowerFuse, relying on a Citrix passtrough client, the good old Program Neighborhood, where we launched an ICA file for starting the passthrough application. Nowadays more customers are migrating to the newest Citrix XenApp version, and subsequently introducing the Citrix online plugin as passthrough client. At our Support department we have seen some side effects, therefore some new  ... READ MORE>>

From several experiences with a Citrix XenApp 6 environment using Citrix Online Plugin 12 installed for launching passthrough applications we have created a short demo movie.

This movie will show a best practice for:
  • How to launch a RES PowerFuse Desktop as initial application. Chosen is to start a ICA Desktop and RES PowerFuse as Custom User Interface by GPO. Advantages for this method: # Desktop is launched as a real desktop:  Minimizing issues with taskbar, focus, screensaver, dual screen, etc. # Easy to exclude Administrators, they can start a desktop without launching RES PowerFuse
  • Publish an Acrobat Reader within RES PowerFuse as passthrough application using Content Redirection
  • A demo how this
