Lately we get a lot of questions on how to migrate usersettings when you are upgrading from a RES PowerFuse 2008 environment to a new Workspace Manager 2011 environment. Especially in a situation where the customer chooses to build a new database next to the production database. A lot of customers have been using User Preferences in RES PowerFuse 2008, and are now upgrading to RES Workspace Manager 2011. Main concern is that your support desk is not floaded with phone calls of users complaining they’ve lost their settings.

Sometimes we run into some issues at the Support department which are really tough issues to tackle. This is one I like to share with you, since the solution is very simple. A customer called us telling us he had an application not working correctly within the RES PowerFuse shell. The application was always started minimized and couldn’t be maximized. With the release of RES PowerFuse 2010 we released Zero Profiling. With this method system engineers can preserve and apply user settings on application level without knowledge of the location of changes made by the user to a specific application. This is a very powerful setting since this setting captures all changes made by a specific application, regardless if it is useful changed data to preserve. So you need to be very careful when enabling this setting in your environment, User preferences files can grow very rapidly. You’ll also find out that capturing settings without knowledge, is a bit understatement. You definitely need to find out where settings are stored. ... READ MORE>>

With the release of Service Release 2 of RES PowerFuse 2010 we introduced some new stuff regarding Zero Profile technology: Templates. For system administrators it seemed to be hard to figure out where the most commonly used user settings are stored in the registry. Resulting in capturing too many registry settings from an application, or even configuring the application to track any changes. Of course this causes a lot of overhead in your user settings files. This article will dive some deeper into the RES PowerFuse 2010 Zero Profiling technology. I will cover 4 things:

• The new feature “User settings Templates” since the release of SR2
