Performance tuning tips RES Workspace Manager 2011 – Part 2

Since I like this way of providing information more and more, encouraged by very positive feedback from our partners and customers, here a short addition to my last performance tuning blog.

Recently we run into an alarm state 1 at the beautiful orange colored RES Suppport floor: two reports of a slow responding RES Workspace Manager environment, could not be a coincident, although….

Performance blog 1 didn’t help, part 2 is born by that.
Luckily the issue has been sorted out quickly, check out the first one below.

    1. Remove RES Workspace Manager full install from Database/SQL and File server

With a full installation of RES Workspace Manager the security drivers are being installed on the system. Although RES is not active within a session, the filterdrivers are active on the system, and could slow down the overall performance of the server.
A full RES Workspace Manager installation is really a no-go on a Database and/or a file server. After a proper deinstallation a reboot is necessary to unload the system drivers.

When only the RES Management Console is required we have a “Console Only” installation msi for that, still not advisable on a database server.
A Console Only installation will never be visible as a RES Agent under
Configuration > Agents. Check this out!

    1. Folder redirection

Folder redirection seems to be a standard operation for administrators, even without reconsidering about the consequences.
Redirecting %LOCALAPPDATA% and/or the TEMP folder to the network/homedrive could cause big delays. Many applications, also RES Workspace Manager, are using the Temp folder pretty intensively. Imagine the impact where temporary files must travel over the network.
We’ve seen this in production, definitely a no-go.

      Check within the user session:
      - [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment]
      - [KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
      Explorer\User Shell Folders]

    1. Since the previous performance blog RES Workspace Manager 2011 SR3 has been released. Check out the release notes, several optimizations has been passed through.
