Saving Time and Money by Trading in the Sticks and Swords
It’s easy to see that IT professionals are busy people. During prosperous times, they are busy implementing new technologies and diving into new projects. Yet during financial downturns, they are even more busy because they still face the same level of expectations but are given lower budgets. While it seems like there is never an ideal time for IT professionals to devote time and energy into learning about new solutions, the irony is that a few hours of research could lead them to solutions that can save them hundreds of hours each year.
It reminds me of a story I once heard about a time travelling salesman. He was selling highly advanced artillery. During his travels, he met a group of 14th century warriors. These warriors were rushing to battle with their sticks and swords. They were so eager to face their enemies, they did not take the time to understand what these new weapons were, or how they could use them. So the salesman did not close any business, and the warriors continued to battle the only way they knew how.
Many IT professionals continue facing their own battles with sticks and swords, including the manual routine tasks that take up about 70% of corporate IT budgets. These daily and weekly repetitive operations needed to keep systems up and running leave little time for important innovation and development.
If you can describe how a task like this is conducted, then by creating a “battle plan,” you can automate it. Even more complex operations that consist of many tasks requiring a certain sequential order can be automated. The concept of Run Book Automation gives IT professionals a solution for executing and running tasks automatically as needed. It is guaranteed to save IT professionals tremendous amounts of time, while ensuring that tasks are getting done on time, the right way.
When I think of the 14th century warriors, I can’t help but hope that IT professionals will do a better job of seizing the resources available to them.
