In addition the many new capabilities we announced with the launch of RES ONE Workspace 2015, we are very excited about the folder redirection capabilities that RES ONE Workspace 2015 delivers. This new feature improves users’ access to data and adds our unique context aware capabilities to traditional folder redirection.
RES ONE Workspace 2015 supports three different modes to configure a folder redirection task including the localization of redirected folders, automatically moving the content of redirected folders, and making redirected folders automatically available offline.
Target Folder Location
Prior to RES ONE Workspace 2015, the folder redirection feature contained one mode where the full redirection target path needed to be configured. RES ONE Workspace 2015 contains three different modes, which can be configured per folder redirection task. These new modes make the configuration of Windows folder redirection much easier and adds the ability to rollback a folder redirection. The three modes are shown in the following image.
The following Target folder location modes can be configured:
- Redirect to the following location – Previously, this option was automatically applied for the folder redirection where you specify a full network path for Root path. This option is also the default value when you create a new folder redirection task.
- Create a folder for each user under the Root path – You can specify a network path without %username%\<foldername> for Root path. The selected Windows folder is automatically added to the specified root path. Example: \\server\Redirection.
- Redirect to the local user profile location – This option provides the ability to rollback a configured folder redirection. Automatically %USERPROFILE%\ is specified for Root path and this value cannot be changed.
The folder redirection feature offers the default set of Windows folders that can be redirected according to Microsoft best practice. If you want to redirect a different Windows folder (special folder), use the User Registry feature at Composition > Actions by type.
Use Localized Names for Redirected Windows Folders
RES ONE Workspace 2015 offers the support for localization of redirected folders. On the Settings tab there is the option Use localized names for redirected Windows folders. When an operating system is set to any other language than English and this option selected, the redirected folder is displayed in the local language of the system the user session is running.
Move the Contents to the New Location
RES ONE Workspace 2015 has the ability to automatically move the contents of a redirected Windows folder to the Root path (target folder location) once.
RES ONE Workspace Manager 2015 not only supports the move of contents when creating a new folder redirection, but also when migrating Root paths. When the Root path is changed, the content of the current Root path will be moved to the new Root path. This is also a one-time move.
Please note that if this option is selected for an existing folder redirection in a RES ONE Workspace 2015 environment with active user sessions, the one-time move will not be executed for those user sessions. The original content in the Windows folder will remain. Changing the Root path at a later stage will cause the contents of the redirected folder in the initial root path to be moved to the new root path.
Make the Contents Available Offline
In addition to the target folder location modes – localization of redirected folders and moving the contents to the new redirected location – RES ONE Workspace 2015 offers the ability to make the contents of the redirected folder available offline (using the Microsoft Windows technology Offline files and folders). An example of how this looks in the system is shown in the following image.
When the option Make the contents available offline and Microsoft Windows Offline files are both enabled, RES ONE Workspace synchronizes the redirected Windows folders for offline use to the Offline Files cache automatically. When this option is deselected, RES ONE Workspace will clean up the Offline Files cache for the configured redirected Windows folder.
Note: For this option to work correctly, the Offline Files in Microsoft Windows must be made available and disk space for the Offline Files cache must be sufficient.
User Event Log
These new folder redirection options in RES ONE Workspace 2015 also brings additional logging capabilities in Diagnostics > Workspace Analysis > Event Log. It will log the following actions:
- Successful or failed folder redirection tasks
- Successful or failed move of contents of redirected folder
- Successful or failed make contents available offline of redirected folder
Here are some examples of the additional logging:
- If the move contents is successfully completed, it shows the amount of time the task has taken to complete. Example:
The folder redirection options in RES ONE Workspace 2015 provide an easy way to manage Windows folder redirection. Together with localization, moving the contents of the redirection folder and making the contents of the redirected folder available offline, RES ONE Workspace 2015 customers can better redirect Windows folders. IT can now provide users with better access to important data both online and offline – improving organization agility.
